Engagement sessions are one of my favorite portrait sessions to photograph! But I’ve found that even though most people are aware of engagement sessions, they are still a bit unsure about the details. Here are all the details so that you’ll be in the know –
What’s an engagement session?
Historically, engagement sessions were used as an opportunity to get a nice professional portrait of the couple that they, and their parents, could use in the formal wedding announcement. Now a days engagement photos are casual photo shoots that let you guys hang out as a newly engaged couple to celebrate this incredible time in your life. And you get some amazing photos that you’ll love forever.
Does an engagement session help us prepare for our wedding day?
Absolutely! Taking engagement photos is hands down the best way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. I’ve never had a couple who took engagement photos be nervous in front of the camera on their wedding day.More importantly – I think that engagement sessions are fun. Couples get the chance to do something together that helps them relax and prepare for their wedding. Engagement photos really are a relaxed and casual way to hang out as a couple.
But don’t sweat it if engagement photos aren’t your thing. You’ll still be great in front of the camera for your wedding photos.
How long is an engagement session?
I usually take around 90 minutes for an engagement session – sometimes a bit shorter, sometimes a bit longer.
How many images are included with an engagement photography session?
I usually deliver around 50 images. Your images will be ready two weeks after your session takes place and will be delivered via an online gallery. You will be able to download any images you like directly from your online gallery immediately, but you’ll also be receiving a USB key with the engagement photos in the mail as well.
When should we book our engagement session?
You should book your engagement session when you book your wedding package to ensure you can choose the date you prefer. If you had plans to use your engagement pictures, ensure you have booked a enough time for your photos to be delivered and your items ordered and delivered in a timely fashion before the wedding.
Can we print our own engagement photos? Will they come with a watermark?
These images are 100% yours. You can print them, make a canvas, create a guest book, turn them into table numbers – anything you’d like to do. I can help you with anything you might like to make as well, but the images will be yours to print as you’d like. Your delivered images will be watermark free.
Where will our engagement photos take place?
Your photo session will take place in Edmonton or the surrounding area. The majority of the couples I work with just let me take care of picking locations, but if you have some ideas please let me know. I’d love to hear about where you met or got engaged. Hearing your story will help me pick photo locations that will be perfect for you.
What should we wear?
Wear clothes that you’ll be comfortable in. You are welcome to dress up, dress down or pick a spot somewhere in between. A great blouse with jeans looks fantastic and you can never go wrong with a sundress. You can also bring along more than one outfit to help switch up the look of your photos. For more ideas on what guys should wear for engagement sessions, check out this post.
The only I don’t recommend is a logo t-shirts. They can be a bit distracting in photos.
What will actually happen at the session?
We’ll meet up and I’ll start the session by giving you some pretty specific instructions on posing and standing and then I’ll take some pictures. As engagement portrait sessions move along, they tend to more casual as you become more comfortable with posing. I’ll give you as much, or as little, direction as you need and will NEVER let you look anything but amazing in your photos. We might switch up locations or clothing along the way.
Can we bring along our pet?
Yes. Yes. And yes! Just let me know ahead of time so that we can pick a pet-friendly location together.
What do we do with our engagement photos?
There are so many ways to use your engagement photos. A guestbook of your engagement photos is always a really great idea – your wedding guests will love flipping through it. I’ve seen people use their engagement photos as table numbers at their wedding, use a large print as a guest book, use the images in a slideshow at the wedding. Create a picture display above the dessert table. Save-the-date cards are a great way to use your engagement photos.
Hey – we had this idea for our engagement pictures – can we try it?
I would love to hear your ideas! I’m pretty much always up to trying out ideas that couples have to help make your engagement photos all about you. Feel free to bring along accessories as well. Play the guitar together? Bring it. Want to get some balloons? Please do.
